Tere tulemast…! Basic words in Estonian

Tere !

After our articles about “How many people speak english in Estonia ?” and the knowledge that a person speaking English can largely fend Estonia. I decided to present some basic words in Estonian because a few native phrases are sure to bring a warm smile to the face “cold” Estonians.

Here is a first list with very basic word :

  • jah – yes
  • ei – no
  • palun – please, you’re welcome
  • aitäh – thanks
  • tere – hello, hi
  • nägemist – bye, see you!
  • vabandage – excuse me , sorry
  • kas te räägite inglise keelt? – do you speak English? (polite)
  • ma ei räägi eesti keelt – I don’t speak Estonian

A second list with other word less common that the first list :

And a short list with number :

  • üks – one
  • kaks – two
  • kolm – three
  • neli – four
  • viis – five
  • kuus – six
  • seitse – seven
  • kaheksa – eight
  • üheksa – nine
  • kümme – ten

As you can see Estonian is a little bit difficult as a language. However for prospective students in Estonia, you can learn Estonian university to 6 credits and this is very interesting.

Ilusat päeva teile !  / Have a good day !
